Bright lights. Beautiful people. Brands galore. You've got it, I'm talking about the digital out-of-home mecca, Times Square. With over 1.5 million impressions per screen, per day, it's no wonder this is the digital advertising (and just plain 'ole advertising) epicenter of the world. And there is no better place to get content out to the world or get your message across, than here. Even if your content is beyond the traditional advertisements we are used to seeing.
Broadway Goes to Broadway.
Theathre go-er's and passerbys were able to view the Tony Awards last month, live from a digital billboard. The awards show were streamed in real-time on Clear Channel's Spectacolor HD digital screen in Times Square, in a joint presentation with co-sponsors Daktronic. Tim Tompkins, president of Times Square Alliance, said in a quote to Output Magazine, "Broadway and Times Square are inseparable, so we are thrilled that the greatest performers on earth can be seen digitally at the most dramatic stage on earth – the heart of Times Square." Sure it's still advertising dressed in disguise but what great content for passerbys to see.
FBI: Most Wanted Billboard
The FBI launched a massive media campaign a few weeks ago seeking the help of unsuspecting citizens to capture cereal killer, Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend, Catherine Greig. This new age "Wanted: Dead or Alive" poster is combined with a wide-scale national TV ad campaign geared towards women. I've blogged about the good DOOH can provide to the community, especially in searches for missing people and criminal suspects, but a Times Square ad (that's likely to get press, as this one is) steps up the hunt a notch.
What non-traditional advertising will we see flashing across Times Square screens next?
