3-D is not just for the movie theatres and your TV anymore. A new technology, called 3-D mapping, is entering in to the DOOH arena and is sure to spice things up. 3-D mapping uses projection technology and state-of-the-art content design to project videos on a building that appears to be three dimensional. This innovative piece of technology is less than 2 years old and is being pioneered by Jack Hattingh, a 30-year film and TV veteran.
In the simplest of explanations, the 3-D videos are created by a mapping technology that reads and registers every aspect of the chosen building, from windows to awnings to ledges and then recreates the building “canvas” in 3-D. Video content is then overlaid on the 3D rendering, with the computer adjusting each image for the contours of the building. Then the images are coordinated and edited, sound is added and the projection is ready to be shown to an audience. We're looking forward to see which brands use this new piece of technology first. We're thinking Coca-Cola's "Happiness Factory" projected on to a metropolitan building is a good candidate for a first run attempt at advertising with this DOOH technology.
